Scott Eastwood Reflects on "Tense" Fury Set Clash with Shia LaBeouf and How Brad Pitt Stepped In

When cameras rolled on David Ayer’s gritty 2014 World War II drama Fury, the intensity wasn't just in front of the lens—it was boiling over off-screen, too.

During an August 3 appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, actor Scott Eastwood (40) reflected on a near-physical altercation with costar Shia LaBeouf on set, revealing how Brad Pitt ultimately had to step in to keep the peace.

A Script Instruction Turned Feud

According to Eastwood, the tension exploded midway through production over a simple detail written directly into the screenplay: chewing tobacco.

"Brad Pitt sort of broke up a tense moment," Eastwood recalled, explaining that LaBeouf was "having an episode" and took issue with him spitting tobacco juice onto the military tank.

Eastwood maintained he was simply following character directions. However, LaBeouf perceived it as a sign of disrespect toward the machine that served as the cast's onscreen home. After trying to keep his distance from the "tormented" star throughout filming, Eastwood eventually hit his breaking point, cursing LaBeouf out as things threatened to spiral out of control.

"Everyone had moments with Shia that were, I think at one point, going to come to blows or not," Eastwood admitted on the podcast. "It's funny, the film industry—it attracts psychopaths."

Brad Pitt’s Side of the Story

This isn't the first time the feud has made headlines. Back in 2014, Eastwood slammed LaBeouf in a British GQ interview, calling him a "complete pain" for demanding he clean up the tank mid-scene.

However, Brad Pitt offered a slightly nuanced perspective during his own chat with GQ at the time. Pitt confessed that he was actually the first one annoyed by the tobacco spitting before LaBeouf jumped in to defend their "home."

"Shia saw it and felt the same... so Shia had the same reaction I did and started having some words," Pitt explained. He noted that he had to intervene after cameras rolled to calm the situation down.

It wasn't until later that evening, when the cast reviewed the script, that they realized Eastwood was completely in the right. "We got home at the end of the day and read the script—it said Scotty's character is 'chewing tobacco and spitting it on the back of the tank.' So he was just doing as instructed!" Pitt added with a laugh.

On Method Acting vs. Set Etiquette

Eastwood previously reflected on the volatile incident during a 2022 interview with Insider, emphasizing that an actor's "process" should never justify creating a toxic work environment.

"I never think your process as an actor should ever hinder how people are treated on set," Eastwood stated. "It should always enhance the production, not take away and put people in a situation where it's a [bad] work environment or you're rude."

While his experience with LaBeouf was far from ideal, Eastwood had nothing but praise for Pitt. On Armchair Expert, he praised the Fury lead as a "consummate pro" and "the nicest guy" in the business.
