Kevin Love Reflects on Robin Williams: "Mental Illness Doesn't Spare Anyone"
How Robin Williams Transformed NBA Star Kevin Love’s Perspective on Mental Health
NBA veteran and five-time All-Star Kevin Love has long been open about his ongoing journey with anxiety and depression. Since first breaking his silence in 2018, the 2016 NBA Champion has consistently leveraged his platform to advocate for mental health awareness, reminding people that emotional well-being requires continuous care and effort.

Throughout his journey, Love has drawn profound inspiration from various figures—most notably the late comedy icon Robin Williams, who tragically passed away in 2014 at age 63. Later reports revealed that Williams was battling Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), a progressive neurological disorder known to trigger severe anxiety, paranoia, and cognitive decline.
In an insightful interview with journalist Graham Bensinger, Love shared how Williams’ story completely reshaped his understanding of depression.
> "If you grew up watching his movies, his stand-up, and experiencing his vibrant personality, you would never think that was the face of depression or mental illness," Love reflected.
For Love, Williams' tragic experience highlighted two critical life lessons: mental health struggles can affect anyone regardless of success, and professional achievement alone will not cure internal battles.
Love emphasized that reaching higher peaks in one's career cannot replace personal inner work. To maintain long-term well-being—both on and off the court—individuals must actively practice self-care and cultivate healthy escapes outside of their daily work environment.
