Henry Winkler Recalls Set Drama on 'Happy Days' and Reflects on His Boldest Scene Yet
Even legendary Hollywood icons have boundaries—and TV legend Henry Winkler recently proved that no amount of fame excuses bad etiquette on set.
Speaking to fans at a recent expo in Tennessee, the 80-year-old actor opened up about his iconic era as Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli on the hit sitcom Happy Days (11 seasons, 1974–1984). While praising the show's tight-knit team culture, Winkler revealed that one specific guest star didn't quite get the memo.

"No Stardom Allowed": The Guest Star Who Ruined the Vibe
"On our set, there was no stardom. We were an ensemble. We worked hard at making it funny every week," Winkler explained.
However, one recurring guest actor continuously disrupted the cast's chemistry by bragging about his popularity off-camera. Winkler recalled stepping in after the actor kept bringing up his fan mail:
> "You don’t want to talk to me about fan mail, I got 50,000 letters a week," Winkler told him, reminding the actor that ego trips were off-limits and that the cast worked as "one."
When the actor ignored the warning and continued bragging, Winkler wasn't afraid to call him out, playfully dubbing the star an "a--back." While Winkler refused to drop real names, he dropped a major hint for TV historians: the character's name was Eugene.

Winkler’s long-standing career spans hit movies like The Waterboy, Holes, and Click, as well as a Golden Globe-nominated role in Heroes. But even after decades in showbiz, he is still crossing off firsts.
In a surprisingly bold career move, Winkler filmed his very first nude scene for the Season 3 premiere of Apple TV's Loot, alongside comedy powerhouse Maya Rudolph.
> "Maya Rudolph is one of my favorites... So, when she asked me to be on the first episode, I didn't even ask to read the script," he admitted.

The surprise came during his first wardrobe fitting, where his entire costume consisted of a single silk robe ending high on his thigh—and absolutely nothing underneath. To make matters crazier, the scene was shot on an freezing beach in January.
"The wind came from every direction," Winkler laughed, recalling how bitterly cold the experience was. "Parts of my body, large and small... It was so cold, I was in shock! But I was with Maya and her wonderful cast."
A Career Built to Last
Despite earning two Golden Globes for playing "The Fonz," Winkler didn't win his first Prime-Time Emmy Award until 2018 for his critically acclaimed role as acting coach Gene Cousineau in HBO’s Barry, starring opposite Bill Hader.
Reflecting on his journey and longevity in the industry, Winkler shared a timeless piece of advice that defined his legacy:
> "Be yourself, be honest about your ability, prepare so that you are not a flash in the pan. When I first started in Hollywood, I thought of myself as a sapling. I planted myself, and I wanted to grow and be strong until I couldn’t do this anymore. And what a great tree it is."
